Chicago Sister Cities International is pleased to announce that the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation, in conjunction with the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, will once again provide a grant for physicians from Chicago’s sister cities to attend the 20th Annual Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium in Chicago from October 11-14, 2018. In honor of the 20th Anniversary of the Symposium, they would like to include one physician from each of our 28 sister cities. As Chicago has been sister cities with Athens, Greece since 1997, we are hoping to get applicants from Athens.

Physicians have to apply for this grant, and the ideal candidate is an oncologist, early in his or her career (rather than a senior physician), with a focus in breast cancer. The Lurie Cancer Center likes to give young physicians the opportunity to experience the Symposium, which attracts 800 physicians from around the world. It is an annual professional educational event providing recent clinical and scientific advances in breast cancer research. The program is an unrivaled opportunity to collaborate with a world renowned cancer center, to meet breast cancer experts from around the world, and to learn about practical patient care strategies and the exciting possibilities of breast cancer research.

The Lurie Cancer Center will pay for the grant winners’ Symposium registration fee to attend the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium, as well as shared hotel accommodations at the Symposium venue and roundtrip airfare to Chicago. Individuals electing to have their own room will be responsible for the additional expense.

As this is a competitive application process, it would be great if we could have a few physicians from Athens apply. In the past, some sister cities had only one physician apply and if they didn’t meet the eligibility requirements and weren’t chosen, then that city didn’t get representation. The more physicians that apply from a given sister city, the more probability that a doctor from that city will be chosen.

I will add that as in past years, the grant winning physicians will be chosen from a review board led by the Symposium Chair, Dr. William Gradishar, MD (please note that Chicago Sister Cities International is not a part of the choosing process – we do not see the applications nor assist in choosing the grant winners). The choice will be based on the applicant’s professional reference letter, their demonstrated interest in the field of breast cancer, how well the theme of the Symposium complements the applicant’s areas of focus, and how the knowledge gained from the Symposium will be shared with colleagues.

During the Symposium week, a dinner is hosted by the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation where all the sister city physicians come together with their respective Consuls General and the board of the Foundation – it’s a great evening of sharing experiences.

You can find more information (program objectives, eligibility, application process, etc.) via the link in the below email (lynnsagebreastcancer.org/sister_cities). I ask for your help in forwarding this email to your contacts, including hospitals and clinics in Athens, in an effort to get Athens physicians who specialize in breast cancer, to apply. The deadline to apply is July 15, 2018.

I thank you in advance for your assistance in helping us promote this wonderful opportunity to physicians in Athens.
